The Ocelots Men's Hockey program came into the weekend with a 0-1-0-0 record following a loss to Men's D1 Toledo University. Saturday's game marked the first home game in the program's history that kicked off a home and home with Trine University.
Game 1- The game would get kicked off and be fast paced from the drop of the puck. It wouldn't take long for the Ocelots to be down a man, the Ocelots has 12 penalties against Toledo, when Austin Brown went to the box for boarding at the 3:28 mark in the 1st period. Schoolcraft would be able to kill the penalty without allowing a goal, but Trine would strike 1st at the 12:32 mark. It would not take long for Schoolcraft to get the goal back as just 23 seconds later, Timmy Hinkle would net a goal with help from Noah Smentowski and Austin Brown. Trint would go up 2-1 off a faceoff win at the 14:45 mark but Schoolcraft would answer again with 21 seconds left in the 1st period as Timmy Hinkle would net his 2nd of the game.
The 2nd period would prove to be very quiet with no goals being scored and just 1 penalty being called, a slashing penalty on Dustin Fretter.
Schoolcraft would come out of the locker room after the 2nd break ready to roll. Dustin Fretter would put the Ocelots up 3-2 with a goal at the 5:39 mark. Andrew Elliott and Logan Tripp would tally an assist on Fretter's goal. 7 minutes later, the Ocelots would get insurance from Andrew Elliott, with help from Fretter and Jerome Pegrum to push the Ocelot lead to 4-2. The Ocelots 5th goal would come on an empty netter from Julian Wainwright with 3 seconds remaining.
Leo Tykoski would get his 1st start of the season and notch his 1st win.
Game 2- Schoolcraft would travel to Angola, Indiana for the 2nd half of the home and home with Trine.
Trine would come out of the gates hot, looking to return the favor to Schoolcraft and give the Ocelots a loss. Trine would strike 1st again at the 6:02 mark in the 1st period. Schoolcraft would not be able to answer in the 1st period, only registering 6 shots on goal to Trine's 12. Schoolcraft would have 2 penalties in the 1st period, William Ballantyne (slashing) and LJ Sabala (slashing).
The 2nd period would have a feel out period at the start. Schoolcraft would have 2 more penalties to start the period, Josh Boze (roughing) and Austin Brown (cross checking). 8 minutes into the period, Julian Wainwright would finally get the Ocelots on the board to tie the game 1-1 and less than a minute later, Andrew Elliott would break the tie with a power-play goal at the 9:04 mark. LJ Sabala would add some insurance with 5 minutes left in the 2nd period to give Schoolcraft a 3-1 lead after 2 periods. Sabala, Boze, Logan Tripp and Max Siratskiy would all record an assist in the 2nd period.
In the 3rd period, Trine would inch closer at the 6:32 mark making the game 3-2. Schoolcraft would stand tall defensively before Andrew Elliott would score his 2nd of the game on an empty net with 40 seconds to play to put the game away.
Lane Schroeder got his 1st start and 1st win of the season in net, facing 39 shots and making 37 saves.
The Ocelots are back on the ice with a home and home against UM-Flint on Friday and Saturday. The Ocelots will be home on Friday with a puck drop at 7:35 PM before traveling to Flint on Saturday for an 8:00 PM puck drop.
