Series Recap: Vincennes University

Vincennes, IN- Over the weekend, the Schoolcraft baseball team traveled down to Vincennes, Indiana for a 4 game series against Vincennes University.

Game 1-

Schoolcraft- 1

Vincennes- 11

In the first game of the series, Schoolcraft did not have much going right for them. A travel mishap had the Ocelots arrive just in time for first pitch. The Ocelots struck first with not much warm up as they got on the board in the top of the first as, #50 Bryan Tuttle singled home #23 Andrew Thorning to notch the games first run. That was all that Schoolcraft could muster as Vincennes would go on to tally 11 runs on the game and, hold Schoolcraft to that lone run. The games highlights for Schoolcraft included, #50 Bryan Tuttle (1-3, 1 RBI)and #18 Landon Kempainen (1-3). 

Game 2-

Vincennes- 5

Game 2 of the series was a much better showing for the Ocelots. Schoolcraft would jump out to a 4-1 lead through 2 complete innings. Schoolcraft would come out hot in the top of the first, #28 Mason Malysz would single to score #18 Landon Kempainen and #29 Noah Felder would follow Malysz up with a 2 RBI double, scoring Malysz and #50 Bryan Tuttle. Vincennes would answer in the bottom of the first with an unearned run but, Schoolcraft would get that run back in the top of the second as #1 Sawyer Pace hit a sac fly that would score #8 John Sowards. The score would remain 4-1 until the bottom of the fifth when Vincennes would plate 2 runs after some defensive miscues. Vincennes tied up the ballgame in the bottom of the 6 after again, some defensive miscues. The defensive lapse would continue in the bottom of the 7 when Vincennes would walk the game off with an unearned run. #4 Jack Zang dealt all game going, 6 innings, 4 runs (3 earned) and 11 strikeouts. On the offensive end, it was #8 John sowards leading the charge. For the game, Sowards was 3-3 with a double and a run scored. 

Game 3-

Schoolcraft- 5

Vincennes- 15

In game 3, Vincennes jumped out quickly and controlled most of the game. Schoolcraft would, once again, get a run in the first inning with #1 Sawyer Pace scoring on a Vincennes error. However, Vincennes would follow Schoolcraft's run with 6 of their own in the bottom half, highlighted by a grand slam. Through 2 innings, Vincennes led 9-1. Offensively, Schoolcraft was led by #50 Bryan Tuttle (2-4), #29 Noah Felder (2-4, 2 RBI) and #8 John Sowards (1-2, 2 RBI and 1 walk). 

Game 4-

The getaway game saw a similar outcome as game 2 of the series, defensive miscues. Through 5 innings, the game was knotted a 2 a piece with Schoolcraft getting a run in the 1 inning (once again) and the fourth inning. Vincennes got their two runs in the third inning. After 7 innings, Schoolcraft would trail 5-2. Schoolcraft would fight their waiy back, scoring a run in the eighth to draw within 2 runs. A quick run scored in the top of the ninth saw Schoolcraft down by one and would get the tying run to third base, but would fail to score him. The leaders for the game would be, #18 Landon Kempainen (2-5), #8 John Sowards (2-4, 2B, 2 R), #22 Nate Saavedra (1-1, 1 RBI) and, #44 Jacob Gresham (1-3, 2B, 1 RBI).

Schoolcraft returns to the diamond on, Wednesday, March 15, 2023 when they travel to Cleary University to take on the Cougars in a double-header. First pitch for game 1 is slated for 2PM.
