Ocelots Pick Up 2 Wins In Roundball Classic

FLINT, Mi -  The Schoolcraft Ocelots women's basketball team traveled to Mott Community College to take part in the 2023 Roundball Classic. The Ocelots were scheduled to compete against Muskegon Community College and Alpena Community College.

On Friday, December 15, the Ocelots squared off against the Jayhawks from Muskegon Community College. Schoolcraft was looking for their 4th win in a row and they certainly got off to a good start. Schoolcraft would score the first 5 points of the game and never turn back from there. When Kyra Lawrence got them on the board just 1 minute into the game, Schoolcraft would never trail the rest of the game. Schoolcraft would lead 19-12 after the first 10 minutes and would only extend their lead in the second quarter as the Ocelots would go into halftime up 36-26. Schoolcraft would continue to push their lead, outscoring Muskegon 21-16 in the third quarter and 14-10 in the final frame. When the final horn blew, Schoolcraft was on top 71-52. Sharon Smith would be the leading scorer with 22 points. Other Ocelots in double figures would be Demi Rodriguez with 17 and Kyra Lawrence who had 15 points but also led the team in rebounds with 11 to give her a double-double. Smith and Rodriguez would tie for the team lead in assists with 3.

Coming off a big win against the Jayhawks, the Ocelots looked to continue their winning ways against the Lumberjacks from Alpena. Just like we saw in the game the night before, Schoolcraft would never trail against the Lumberjacks. The score would be 2-2 just 35 seconds into the game but from then on, Schoolcraft would lead the rest of the way. Defense would be the name of the game for the Ocelots as the second quarter would be the only quarter in which Alpena would reach double figures (14). Schoolcraft would lead 36-21 after 20 minutes and continue to hound on the defensive end from there. Alpena would only muster 16 more points for the game en route to a 74-37 Ocelot victory. Schoolcraft would have 5 players reach the double figures mark. Kyra Lawrence would lead the team with 21 and following her would be Sharon Smith (10), Erin Young (10), Garyana Overton (12) and Nevaeh Cable (12). Demi Rodriguez and Taylor Sullivan, off the bench, would share the team lead with 4 assists. Lawrence would come up 1 rebound shy of a double-double leading the team with 9.

Schoolcraft is back in action on Tuesday, December 19, as they travel to Edison State with tip-off at 5:30 PM.
